A jury in Lucca sentenced 23 of the 33 indicted for negligence and co-responsibility for the 2009 fuel train derailment carrying liquefied petroleum gas at midnight in the Viareggio station. Because of the liquefied petroleum cargo that spilled out, an explosion, flash fire, and ultimately the deaths of 32 residents in the surrounding neighborhood was the tragic result.
Families of the victims were present in the courthouse. Among those sentenced to jail terms (pending appeal) was the then-CEO of the Italian Railways.
