The 37th annual Porretta Soul Festival is coming up on July 24 through July 27. There is, however. a preview on July 9 introducing the audience to what Porretta Soul has to offer.
On July 9, the festival will highlight the harmonic voices of the 66-piece choir, Uniting Voices Chicago, conducted by Josephine Lee. Their performance will begin at 9 pm at the Porretta Terme Rufus Thomas Park. The choir has performed for several notable guests, including Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela and the Dalai Lama. They have also collaborated with prominent artists like Celine Dion, Yo-Yo Ma, Luciano Pavarotti, Chance the Rapper, the Eagles, Andrea Bocelli and Bobby McFerrin.
The choir was formed in 1956 by Reverend Moore. During the struggle for civil rights, the reverend strove to bring the people of Chicago together. Since the 1950s, Uniting Voices Chicago has brought together children from an array of diverse cultures and backgrounds, reminding them and the audience that music is the key to fostering a connection.
Throughout the day, there will also be performances from 20 different Italian bands showcasing young musicians at the Rufus Thomas Cafe Stage. You can also enjoy free concerts as part of the traditional Street Food event.
The Porretta Soul Festival unites Italian scenery with the soulful heart of Memphis, creating a captivating and inspiring festival to enrich your time in Italy this summer. (Mia Schaeperkoetter)
