Jonathan Bartoletti, known as “Scompiglio” lived up to his nickname (which means to turn things upside down) by winning the August 16 Siena Palio dell’Assunta twice in the same year on the same horse, Preziosa Penelope (Precious Penelope), for the same contrada (neighborhood) Lupa. Prior to the July 2 Palio, during which Bartoletti came from behind to cross the finish line first as he did again today, the last time Lupa won was in 1989.
More racing history: the same jockey was victorious twice on the same horse in the same year happened in 1933. To see a photo gallery of the iconic bareback horse race in Siena’s Piazza del Campo, see Florence’s La Repubblica news site.
