Perched on the ancient walls of Lucca, the Murabilia Garden Show is one of Italy’s most beloved horticultural events. Each September, the city’s medieval ramparts are transformed into an open-air exhibition of rare plants, flowers, and garden design, drawing growers and enthusiasts from across Europe. The trees that sprout from Lucca’s walls create a natural setting unlike any other, where stalls and displays wind along the fortifications in a festival of colour and fragrance.
This year the festival runs from 10am on September 5 until 7 pm on the September 7. Tickets can be purchased online at https://murabilia.com/ — with prices starting at €9.
Murabilia is renowned for its diversity, featuring everything from exotic orchids and bonsai to heirloom fruits, vegetables, and seeds. Specialist nurseries present unique specimens, while gardeners can browse tools, crafts, and design ideas to bring inspiration back home. Alongside the stalls, lectures and workshops offer visitors a chance to deepen their knowledge, making the event both a feast for the eyes and a hub for learning.
This year, the garden show coincides with a new initiative in Lucca, the Lucca – Card, a unified pass that allows tourists to explore eleven of the city’s cultural landmarks – from the Cathedral of San Martino and Puccini’s birthplace to the Torre Guinigi and the Botanical Garden, for just €29 over three days. It’s a fitting complement to Murabilia, highlighting the city’s blend of history, art, and natural beauty.
For garden lovers, Murabilia offers more than plants for sale, it’s a celebration of creativity, biodiversity, and the enduring bond between Lucca’s living walls and the people who tend them.
