Sept. 10 – 13: CHIANTI CLASSICO WINE FAIR. Piazza Matteotti, Greve in Chianti. Open 5 – 10 pm (Thursday), 11 pm – 10 pm (Friday), 11 am – 8 pm (Saturday), 11 am – 9 pm (Sunday). Admission: 10 euro.
Located in the midst of the vineyards that produce the world-famous Chianti Classico, the picturesque town of Greve is transformed into a hub of activity for four days. More than 50 different Chianti Classico wine producers set up stands in Greve’s main piazza, alongside a larger stand representing other vineyards belonging to the Chianti Classico wine consortium.
Not only do you sample the wines but you can also talk to the producers themselves. The town’s main square hosts free olive oil, salami and cheese tastings. Fine wines and specialty food products may be purchased to take home.
Included in the ticket is the chance to visit the wine cellars of the nearby Verrazzano castle on Friday evening beginning at 7:30 pm.
The 10 euro entry fee gives the visitor a punch card providing eight tastings and a souvenir wine glass. Look out for riserva wines, which cost two punches in the card. (r.c. & e.g.)
