From midnight on Saturday April 11 until 3 pm on Sunday the 12th, all high-speed rail services between Rome and Florence will be fully suspended. High speed trains operated by Trenitalia (including Frecciarossa services) and Italo will not be running.
Parts of the regular line will also be closed; the Orte-Roma Tiburtina section of the line will be suspended on Saturday from 2 pm until 5 am on Sunday. As a result, connections between Rome and Florence will be significantly reduced, and passengers are advised to check before travelling.
The shutdown will allow the implementation of European Train Control System (ERTMS) on the line – an advanced digital signalling technology to improve rail efficiency and safety. This is the final segment of the high-speed line to be upgraded, completing the full implementation of the new system.
From 3 pm on Sunday, April 12 train services will begin to resume, initially with a reduced timetable. Normal service on both high-speed and conventional lines is expected to return on Tuesday 14. (Aniela Cabut)
