Each year The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) awards the ”Blue Flags,” which names the best beaches on the Italian coast based on 32 different factors. In 2024 Tuscany has a total of 18 municipalities and 38 beaches awarded Blue Flag status. There are no new entries this year, however, Marciana Marina on the Island of Elba has lost its Blue Flag this year due to environmental issues.
Whilst the award is not necessarily an award for landscapes it takes into consideration a more holistic view of what constitutes a pleasant beach and sea. The beaches are assessed on factors such as the cleanliness of water, waste management, safety of bathers, accessibility and the preservation of natural habitats and environments.
This year the highest concentration of awards is in the municipalities of Orbetello, Livorno and the Larbonica province. Tuscany itself takes sixth place in Italy for the overall ranking of coastlines and destinations.
