Montepulciano is hosting its annual Christmas market and Santa Claus Castle at a stunning historical setting, located in Piazza Grande. In December, the market will be open daily from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm on Sunday, Dec. 1, 6 – 8, 14 – 15, and from Dec. 20 through January 6, 2025. Montepulciano’s famous Christmas market offers the chance to experience the flavors of Tuscany, including pecorino cheese, extra virgin olive oil, and the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Italy’s first DOCG wine. The market additionally features unique local artisan crafts. The town is filled with landmarks including the Civic Museum in Palazzo Neri Orselli, plus the Cathedral and Palazzo Comunale (City Hall) in Piazza Grande. This event, approaching its eleventh anniversary, offers entertainment for both adults and children. The initiative will also include a traditional market with 70 wooden chalets located in Piazza Grande and Via San Donato, as well as concerts, theatrical performances, and exhibitions.
The Santa Claus Castle is perfect for families during the Christmas season. The castle is within the medieval Fortress of Montepulciano (Medici Fortress), located near Piazza Grande. The site is open on Dec. 1, 6 – 8, 14 – 15, 21 – 24, 26 & January 6. Visiting hours are 10:30 am to 7 pm and 2 to 7 pm from Dec. 27 through Jan. 6. The event will be closed on Christmas Day. The fortress’s interior is beautifully decorated, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the holiday spirit and explore where Santa Claus and his elves live. Children can visit the enchanted kitchen, and winter garden where the reindeer reside, and even be a passenger on the magic sleigh! Kids will also be able to ride ponies and families can enjoy both sweet and savory treats. For children to 2 years old, admission is free. For visitors seeking a calm break overlooking the city, the Christmas Terrace is located in the heart of the historic center, just a few feet from Piazza Grande. The venue has a stunning view of Val d’Orcia, offering visitors the chance to admire the breathtaking local landscape. Food and wine, including the local Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, are also available for purchase.
A dedicated shuttle service running every 30 minutes from the park-and-ride lots to stops near the historic center. Shuttle operates on key dates. Recommended parking areas include Piazzale delle Grazie and Porta delle Farine.
