The Perfect Pizza Tour of Tuscany

It is a truth universally acknowledged that when visiting Italy, one must eat lots of pizza. The 50 Top Pizza rankings have just been published for 2025. With seven of the coveted 50 spots being in Tuscany, what better way to explore the region than through a food tour? Here is a recommendation of all the best and highest ranked pizza spots in Tuscany, including several who are in the top 50 rankings.

Our pizza tour of Tuscany starts along the coast with two pizzerias less than an hour away from the beach at Forte dei Marmi, in the Province of Lucca. In the town of Marina di Pietrasanta is the highly praised Apogeo pizzeria. The highest rated pizzeria in Tuscany for two years in a row, it was ranked as the 19th best pizzeria in 2025. The guide wrote, ‘every bite is an explosion of taste that makes you want to return’. This is credit to owner and chef Massimo Giovanni and his wife Barbara who strive to make the pizzeria known for its quality ingredients, stellar customer service and crispy dough. Nearby, Pizzeria Battil’oro is in the village of Querceta. In 2024 Battil’oro was ranked as the 66th best pizzeria in Italy. Owner and chef Gennaro Battiloro opened the pizzeria in 2018 and since then it has consistently won awards such as the Tre Spicchi. The pizzeria has been praised for its innovative pizza and cocktail combinations.

Further south along the Tuscan coast lies the Bottega di Dani in Cecina, province of Livorno. Bottega di Dani is near the coastal towns of Mazzanta and Cecina known for nature reserves and camping sites. Ranked as the 78th best pizzeria in Italy in 2024, the Bottega di Dani is known for owner Gabriele Dani’s signature pizza dough. Gabriele prides himself on the pizzeria’s unique approach to gastronomy, where the fusion of dough and ingredients becomes an art and a science.

East of Cecina inland s the ancient city of Arezzo where the ‘O Scugnizzo pizzeria can be found. Located in the historic centre of Arezzo, ‘O Scugnizzo was ranked as Italy’s 30th best pizzeria in 2025. The restaurant is owned by Pierluigi Police and his family, who celebrated the 25th birthday of ‘O Scugnizzo this year. Pierluigi strives for the perfect pizza through researching gluten structures and creating the best pizza combinations by taking inspiration from traditions and memories.

Before finishing in Florence no food tour of Tuscany is complete without a stop in La Fenice Contemporanea in the town of Pistoia. La Fenice Contemporanea was judged as the 21st best pizzeria in this year’s Top Pizza Awards. Every detail of the pizzas is carefully crafted, creating an unforgettable dining experience. La Fenice pride themselves on their contemporary and innovative approach to pizza, such as the Japanese inspired Uramaki fusion.

In the province of Firenze, northeast of Florence is the mountainous municipality of Marradi, home to the Gli Allocchi pizzeria. Gli Allocchi is a relatively new pizzeria, only being two years old, but it is already becoming established as one of the best pizzerias in Tuscany. This year it was listed as the 100th best pizzeria in Italy in the Top Pizza rankings. In homage to the local area, the pizzas are dedicated to the places of Marradi, such as the ‘Marradese’ pizza that uses local Mugello chestnuts. Gli Allocchi has also been praised for their variety in crust, featuring traditional Neapolitan style, ricotta filled crust and classic Tuscan crunchiness.

Pizza is undeniably Italy’s most successful global export, but what better place to try it than exploring the beautiful province of Tuscany. Soaking up all the historic sites, natural beauty and the delicious tomato sauce on perfectly crafted dough.
