Severe Storm Causes Flooding on Elba Island

Residents and visitors in Portoferraio, on the north coast of Elba Island were forced to stay indoors as the area was hit by thunderstorms and accompanying strong winds on September 9 and 10.  Ferry service to and from Portoferraio was also suspended, and landline phone service interrupted.  Nearly three inches of rain fell in less than an hour, causing the streets to be flooded.  Adverse weather conditions also caused a landslide in the nearby town of Forno.

The south side of the island was badly affected as well.  An 81-year-old woman in Marina di Campo died after a fall on the ground floor of her home, which was flooded.  Five people were taken to the hospital in Portoferraio – one was the victim of a stroke and the others suffered injuries during falls in slippery conditions.
