The residents of Marradi were awakened by an earthquake in the Mugello Valley on September 18, 2023 at 5:10 am. The Civil Protection Agency estimates that the maximum tremors measured 4.9 on the Richter scale. The earthquake is classified as light causing minor damage and no casualties but panic. Aftershocks were registered, following the earthquake.
Patients in nursing homes have been evacuated, and schools remain closed for the day in Marradi, Palazzuolo sul Senio and Borgo San Lorenzo. Pieces of stone have detached from a number of facades of historical buildings and minor cracks have opened up in some homes.
The earthquake was also felt by those living in the nearby region of Emilia-Romagna, especially in Faenza, Imola in addition to Forlì and Cesena.
While high speed trains have resumed running between Florence and Bologna as well as Pontassieve and Borgo San Lorenzo, service has been canceled on the Florence – Faenza line, substituted by buses along the same route.
