A Drop in Tuscan Olive Oil Production Forecast for 2025

The 2025 olive harvest in Tuscany is forecast to result in 15-20% fewer bottles of extra virgin olive oil expected to be placed on the market later this year.  Production was more bountiful in 2024.

The current situation results from inconsistent temperatures, decreased rainfall, and the spread of the olive fruit fly.  For many cultivators, there is very little profit margin left in the olive oil production.  The June heat wave followed by below average temperatures in July created ideal conditions for the propagation of the olive fruit fly, which lays eggs in immature olives that consequently do not reach maturation.  The only areas in Tuscany not expected to be affected by all these factors are the southern provinces of Siena and Grosseto.

The olive oil harvest will start along the Tuscan coast at the end of September and the beginning of October, around Florence in mid-October.  A price of a bottle of extra virgin can be as high as €30, reaching €34 abroad.
