Greve’s 2021 Expo del Chianti Classico Wine Fair

Fri. 10 – Sun. 12:  EXPO DEL CHIANTI CLASSICO WINE FAIR.  Piazza Matteotti, Greve in Chianti. Open 11 am – 9 pm.  Admission: € 10.  Access with a Green Pass (including the equivalent from a foreign country), valid documentation of vaccination or with certification of negative swab in the last 48 hours or by taking a rapid, antigen test in Piazza Matteotti near the church.  The cost for the latter is €10 for ages 12 – 18, €15 for adults.  The SITA bus company from the Florence station provides public transportation to Greve.

Located in the midst of the vineyards that produce the world-famous Chianti Classico, the picturesque town of Greve is hosting a streamlined version of this annual wine event. A pavilion displays 120 vintages from 60 estates located in the consortium production zone and sommeliers will provide guided tastings.  Unlike other editions, producers will not be on hand to present their wines.  As always, there will be live music and local shops open all day until late.

The €10 entry fee gives the visitor a punch card providing six tastings and a souvenir wine glass. Keep in mind that reserve (riserva) quality vintages that have been aged a minimum of two years, which cost two punches in the card.  Special guided group tasting events in Italian with simultaneous English translation held in Greve’s City Hall daily are offered at €15; one scheduled at 4 pm on Sunday focuses on how to best experience and gain knowledge about a wine through tasting three types of Chianti Classico; at 6 pm, guests will learn about food and wine pairing.  Reservations required by sending an email to expochianticlassico@gmail.com.

Estates in the area will also welcome visitors for tours of their cellars and personalized wine tastings between September 11 and 20.  (rosanna cirigliano)
